Alcohol, facts for kidsIf a person drinks too much beer or wine he becomes intoxicated. The intoxicating substance in these drinks is alcohol. It is formed by a process called fermentation, in which tiny organisms called yeasts act on natural sugars. Wine, for example, is made from juice pressed from grapes. Yeasts from the grapes get into the juice and feed on the sugar it contains to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide gas, which bubbles off. Cider is made from apples in a similar way. Beer is produced by fermenting grain, usually barley. Alcohol, facts for kidsTo make malt whisky, barley is allowed to germinate. It is then roasted above a peat fire and mashed with water. Yeast is added and the fermenting liquid is distilled in pear-shaped copper stills. The alcohol vapor is led through watercooled pipes, in which it condenses to form whisky Alcohol facts: when the alcohol reaches a certain level it kills the yeast and prevents further fermentation. To increase the amount of alcohol, the fermented liquid must be distilled. The alcohol boils away first and is condensed (turned back into liquid). The so-called 'spirits', such as whisky, brandy and gin are distilled. Industrially, alcohol is often made from cereals and potatoes. It is widely used as a solvent, or dissolving substance, for many organic chemicals. It is used as such in lacquers. Alcohol is one of a group of chemicals called the alcohols. It is also called ethanol and ethyl alcohol. Other important alcohols include methanol, or wood alcohol, used in methylated spirits. Ethylene glycol is another alcohol, used for antifreeze.
