Alexander the Great (356-323 B.C.) was a powerful ruler and a
brilliant military leader. He conquered much of the civilized world,
spreading Greek culture throughout his territories. As a boy,
Alexander was tutored by Leonidas (perhaps his uncle) and
Aristotle,
who taught him to love Greek literature and philosophy. He became
king of Macedonia before he was 20, when his father was
assassinated.
The Greek states were restless under Macedonian rule,
and began to revolt against the young king. Alexander stormed the
city of Thebes, destroying nearly every building. The spirit of the
rebellion was broken, and the Greek states joined together under
Alexander.
Having united Greece, Alexander launched a
war on Persia. With 30,000 foot soldiers and 5,000 cavalry, he marched into

He continued his march into Egypt. Weary of Persian rule, the Egyptians welcomed his coming. He founded the great city of Alexandria in Egypt. He defeated Darius, the Persian
king, in the historic battle of Arbela. Babylon, Susa, and
Persepolis, the richest and most beautiful cities of the time,
opened their gates to welcome his coming.
Alexander died at Babylon, which he had made capital of his vast
empire. The facts of Alexander the Great death is unknown. It could
have been poison or disease. At the height of his power, this empire
reached from Greece to north-western India.
