Algeria, facts for kids
Algeria is the second largest country in Africa. Situated in the
north-west, its coastline faces the Mediterranean Sea. Most
Algerians are Arabs or Berbers who live in the most fertile northern
part of the country. The center and south are part of the waterless
Sahara. The Atlas Mountains separate the fertile coastlands from the
sun-baked desert.

Temperatures in the north sometimes reach 100° F (38° C) in
summer. But they fall below freezing point in winter. Between 18 and
30 inches of rain fall every year in the north. Less than a quarter
of all Algerians live in towns or cities. Most of the others are
farmers. Important exports include fruit, iron ore, phosphates and
wine. Today petroleum and natural gas extracted from under the
Sahara are also becoming important. The gas and oil are piped
northwards to the coast and then shipped to Europe.
