Aquarium: information about fish tankAquarium is a tank for keeping fishes and other water animals. It usually has glass (or plastic) sides for viewing the inhabitants. A home aquarium can easily be made with a glass tank bought from a pet shop. The bottom should be covered with a layer of sand and gravel one or two inches deep, and clean water gently poured in. Place water plants in the tank - these will provide the fishes with oxygen. Plants include Elodea, Vallisneria, and Sagittaria, but many others can be used. The aquarium should be kept in a bright place, though not in sunlight, or provided with a light bulb. For tropical fish, the water should be kept at 70° F (21° C) with an electric heater. Aquarium: information about fish tankExotic tropical fishes are fascinating to watch and easy to keep in a heated aquarium An aquarium can support only a certain number of fishes. For every inch of a fish's body, there should be 20 square inches of water surface for tropical fish and 24 square inches for non-tropical fish. If there are too many fishes, there will not be enough oxygen in the water and some fishes will rise to the surface and gasp. These fishes should be removed or an aerator used to bubble air through the water. Aquarium fishes can be fed with prepared foods from pet shops. Goldfish will eat insects. Fishes should be given no more than they will eat in 10 minutes, and uneaten food should be removed. Marine fishes are more difficult to keep in an aquarium, but they will survive if continually provided with clean sea water. An aerator is necessary, and the aquarium should be kept in a cool and dim place. Marine animals picked up on the sea-shore, such as anemones and mussels, can also be kept in a marine aquarium.
