Arnold, BenedictArnold, Benedict (1741-1801), was an American officer of the Revolutionary War who deserted to the British. Early in the war he fought bravely and was promoted to major-general. In 1779, as commander of Philadelphia, he was tried for misconduct. In 1780, he became commander of West Point Fort, and arranged to betray it. When the plot was discovered, he fled to British-occupied New York. After the war, Arnold went to England. He was born in Norwich, Connecticut, and died in England.
