Colorado River
Lake Mathews, near Los Angeles, southern California, is the terminus of the 242-mile-long Colorado River Aqueduct, constructed during the 1930's to bring water from the lower levels Colorado River to the Los Angeles area.
Colorado River flows through Colorado, Utah, Arizona and Mexico into the Gulf of California. It is about 1,700 miles long. This great river flows for hundreds of miles through deep valleys that it has carved in the high Colorado plateau. Part of this valley forms the Grand Canyon (see Grand Canyon). Below the Grand Canyon, near the Colorado's junction with the Virgin River, stands the mighty, 727-foot-high Boulder Dam, which controls flood-water and powers hydroelectric plants.
