Cork, facts about corkCork is a tough, spongy substance found in the bark of trees. Cork is waterproof, heat-resistant, and extremely lightweight. It gives the tree plenty of protection against the weather, and against harmful insects and fungi. The cork oak tree of the Mediterranean region produces copious quantities of cork, and is grown commercially for this reason. Cork is stripped from the bark of these trees once in every nine years, when a layer an inch or more thick may be obtained. Cork is used for shock-absorbers in machinery, to seal bottles, and to make floor tiles. You can read these articles also:: |
