Dairy farmingDairy Farming is an important industry in temperate countries such as the United States, Britain and New Zealand. The milk that dairy cattle produce, and the cream, butter and cheese that are made from the milk, are all important foods. Dairy cattle need to live on lush pasture land ..with adequate rainfall and sunshine. All cows produce milk to feed their young. They produce the milk for about 10 months following the birth of a calf. Farmers arrange for their cows to give birth to calves at about the same time each year so that they will produce milk during most of the year. Dairy cows are milked twice a day, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, in a clean cowshed. Milking is done either by hand, by pulling and squeezing the cow's teats, or by suction with a milking machine. Each cow produces about 2V2 gallons a day. Friesian cows produce the most milk, but Jersey cows give the richest milk, used for making butter and cream.
