Facts about orchestra

Orchestra is a large group of musicians playing many kinds of instruments. Groups of musicians playing only a few kinds of instruments are usually called bands.

The symphony orchestra may contain more than a hundred players. It is arranged by sections of instruments (see Musical instruments). The strings account for about two-thirds of the players and sit at the front of the orchestra. The violins are usually seated in two groups (first and second). The woodwinds are usually in the middle behind the violas. The brass, few in number but mighty in power, are usually at the back to one side, while the percussion section is at the back to the other side. Solo performers such as pianists, violinists, or singers are always at the front by the conductor, who has complete control of this vast array of forces.

Facts about orchestras: symphony orchestras

Facts about orchestra: symphony orchestras usually consist of more than 100 musicians. Two-thirds play stringed instruments

A symphony orchestra is the largest kind of orchestra. Some composers write pieces for strings only, and a string orchestra usually contains about thirty players. If a few woodwind or other players are added, the orchestra is generally called a chamber orchestra. The small orchestras in theaters are known as pit orchestras because they play in the pit in front of the stage. They usually consist of strings, a few woodwind and brass players, and a percussionist.

In jazz music, a large group is made up of a brass section of trumpets and trombones, a section of saxophones, and a rhythm section of piano, double bass, and drums. This group is often called a big band, and most dance orchestras or dance bands are made up like this.

A modern jazz orchestra contains instruments such as flutes and a vibraphone to produce more varied sounds. A variety orchestra or light orchestra is usually a big band with a large string section. The gamalan orchestras of southeast Asia consist almost entirely of percussion instruments such as xylophones, gongs, and chimes.
