Facts about rayon

Rayon is a silky, lustrous fiber made from wood pulp or cotton. The most common kinds of rayon are viscose and triacetate. Triacetate rayons are better known under their trade names of Arnel (United States) and Tricel (Britain).

Viscose rayon is one of the most widely used of all textile fibers. In long, filament form it is used to make the corded fabric in automobile tires. In short, staple form it is spun into yarn for use in all kinds of clothing and especially for carpets.

Triacetate fabrics can be permanently pleated. Viscose is made up of pure cellulose, which has been dissolved and then reformed, or regenerated from solution in fiber form. Triacetate is a compound of cellulose which has been made into fibers in a similar way.
