Franklin Pierce interesting facts

Pierce, Franklin (1804-69), was the 14th president of the United States. During Pierce's term of office (1853-57), the United States expanded to include parts of Arizona and Mexico, and a southern railroad route to the Pacific coast. People were also encouraged to settle in the Northwest. A treaty was signed with Japan, making trade possible. At this time some Franklin Pierce laws were accepted.

Pierce was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshire. He studied law, and started his own practice in 1827. After serving in the House of Representatives and Senate, he was nominated for the Presidency by the Democratic Party in 1852. He won because he was respected by both Northerners and Southerners. Pierce did not win a second nomination because he protected the rights of immigrants, and also supported the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.

This act stated that settlers of the two new territories could decide for themselves whether they wanted slavery. People both for and against slavery moved into the territories, and fighting broke out between them. This clash contributed to the breaking up of old party systems and to the formation of the Republican Party. Pierce lost much of his popularity.
