Fun facts about Austria

Austria is a mainly mountainous country in the center of Europe. About three-quarters of Austria lies in the Alps. The highest peak is the Grossglockner (12,461 feet). The valleys of the rivers Inn, Salzach and Enns provide passes through the mountains. For example, the Brenner Pass allows people to travel through the mountains to Italy and Yugoslavia. Trees cover much of the Alpine area.

North of the Alpine area lies a lower plateau, through which flows the River Danube. Farmers cultivate more than half of this region.

East of the plateau lies the Vienna Basin, a rich, fertile valley. The Danube River flows through this region and forms an important means of transport. Austria's natural resources include huge reserves of timber. The country is rich in minerals, including iron ore, lignite, copper, gold, and silver. Most of the country's power comes from hydroelectric stations in the Alps. The people of Austria are mostly German-speaking. They have close ties with the people of Germany. In 1867, Austria granted the province of Hungary equal status within the Austrian empire, which then became the Austro-Hungarian empire.

In 1918, the Austro-Hungarian empire broke up, and Austria was left with about the same territory that it has today. It then became a republic. In 1938, Austria was occupied by the Germans. It regained its independence in 1955. During the late 1960's Austria became one of the most highly industrialized countries in Europe.

Austria joined the European Union (EU) in 1995. This country also signed the Schengen Agreement in 1995. In 1999 the Austrian currency became Euro.
