Rhodesia, facts and history of Rhodesia

Facts of Rhodesia: officially the Republic of Rhodesia from 1970, is a landlocked country situated in southern Africa. Most of the land is a plateau rising to 5,000 feet above sea level. As a result, most of Rhodesia does not have a tropical climate, although it lies in the tropics, but is pleasantly warm throughout the year.

Most Rhodesians are African peoples. But about one-twentieth of the people are of European descent. Most Africans are farmers, but some work in the cities. Some go to South Africa or Zambia to become miners. About a third of the land in Rhodesia can only be owned by Europeans, and many Europeans own large farms.

Farming is Rhodesia's main industry and tobacco is the chief export crop. Other important products include asbestos, chrome ore, corn and meat. The Kariba Dam on the Zambezi River provides electricity for Rhodesia's expanding industries.

History of Rhodesia: in 1923, Rhodesia (then called Southern Rhodesia) became a self-governing British colony. This meant that it had its own government which handled internal affairs, but Britain retained real control. In the 1960's, the European-dominated Rhodesian government demanded independence from Britain. But Britain refused and finally Rhodesia declared itself independent in November 1965. Britain declared this an illegal act and many countries, including Britain, restricted trade with Rhodesia. But this action failed and Rhodesia declared itself a republic in 1970.
