Information about Bahrain

Bahrain - officially Kingdom of Bahrain - is a small country. It consists of a group of islands, by far the largest of which is also called Bahrain. This group of islands lies in the Gulf of Bahrain, between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The total area of the sheikdom is 231 square miles. Bahrain Island itself is about 30 miles long and, at the most, 10 miles wide. Much of the island is desert and most of the sheikdoms 1,234,596 people live and work in towns. Manama, the capital and largest town, is also an important port. A causeway connects Manama to the island of Muharraq where Bahrain Airport is located. Bahrain Airport is the busiest airport in the Persian Gulf region.

Bahrain has important oil fields and large oil refineries. In the late 1960s, Bahrain announced that it intended to form a federation with Qatar and the Trucial States in 1971, when Britain planned to withdraw from the area.
