Information about Northwest TerritoriesNorthwest Territories. The Northwest Territories are one of Canada's two Territories. Like the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories lie north of the 60th parallel of latitude. With an area of 1,304,903 square miles, this vast region covers over a third of Canada's total area.
The population of the whole Northwest Territories is only 52,000. About a third of the people are Eskimos, a fifth are American Indians and the rest are of European descent. Fishing and hunting are the main occupations of the people. Fishermen catch whitebait and trout in the Great Slave Lake and on the sea coast. Eskimos hunt seals, walruses and white whales. The Arctic fox is also hunted for its valuable white fur. The Northwest has many deposits of minerals such as gold, natural gas and petroleum, but they have not been fully exploited. Territories are divided into three districts, Franklin, Keewatin and Mackenzie. The District of Franklin is in the north and includes the islands of Ellesmere, Baffin and Victoria. Here, at their farthest north, the Northwest Territories are only 600 miles from the North Pole. The high mountains of Ellesmere, which rise to over 8,000 feet, are bleak and unforested.
Alexandra Falls are located on the Hay River: information about Northwest TerritoriesFew plants flourish in the 25° F of Ellesmere's summers and none survive the — 40° F of the winters. The District of Keewatin, which covers the eastern part of the Territories, is nearly as bleak as Franklin. Its temperatures are slightly higher, but few people live here except near Hudson Bay. The western District of Mackenzie is the most hospitable of the three Districts. It borders the Yukon Territory in the Rockies and includes the Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes. Trees grow along the Mackenzie River and summer temperatures in southern Mackenzie are over 503F. Where there is no permafrost (permanent frost), land has been cultivated and animals put out to graze. Yellowknife, the capital and largest town of Northwest Territories, is situated in Mackenzie, near Great Slave Lake.
