Interesting facts about the Bahamas
Bahamas or Commonwealth of the Bahamas are a chain of islands in the West Indies. They
stretch for about 700 miles from the southeastern coast of Florida
as far as the southern tip of Cuba.
The Bahamas cover an area of about 4,404 square miles and have a
population of about 338 958. There are more than 1,000 islands in
the chain, but only about 30 are inhabited. Nassau, the capital of
the Bahamas, is on New Providence Island.

White coral beaches, a warm, sunny climate and beautiful scenery
have made the Bahamas one of the world’s most fashionable tourist
resorts. There are many brightly colored birds and fish to be seen
throughout the islands. Tourism provides most of the income of the
Bahamas. Many things involve tourists here, the Bahama hotels are
considered as one of the best for example. The most important
industry is the production of salt. Other exports include wood pulp,
tomatoes, cucumbers and crayfish.

has speared a crayfish. These relatives of lobsters are good to eat
and are an important Bahaman export
In 1492, Christopher Columbus became the first European to
discover the islands. He probably landed at San Salvador Island.
