Precious stones, diamond facts for kids
Precious stones are minerals or stones which are highly prized
for their beauty. They are used in jewelry. Precious stones are dug
up from the ground. They become beautiful only after skilled workers
grind them into shape and polish them to bring out their brilliance
or glow.
The diamond, the hardest known mineral, is among the mostly
highly valued of all precious stones. It is a pure form of carbon.
The carbon was probably changed into diamonds by great heat and
pressure in the Earth's crust millions of years ago. Most diamonds
are mined in Africa. The most precious diamonds are colorless.

Precious stones are highly
valued because of diamonds use in jewelry. The diamonds
(left) come from South Africa, where some of the finest
of these magnificent gems have been found. The Imperial
State Crown (right) contains many superb stones. It is
part of the British Crown diamonds and jewels |
Other precious stones are valued according to the quality of
their color. For example, rubies, which come largely from Burma,
Ceylon and Thailand, are blood-red. Many fine blue sapphires have
been found in Thailand. Beautiful green emeralds have been found in
Colombia, India, Rhodesia and Russia. Imitation stones are now
widely made from a soft glass. Imitations are easily scratched.
