The engine of a motorbikes similar in many respects to that of an
automobile, but much smaller. It, too, has either a two-stroke or a
four-stroke engine with gasoline as fuel. It may have one, two,
three, or four cylinders, which are cooled by air or water. The
engine is started by kicking down a kick-starter. This turns the
engine over and starts it firing, just like the self-starter on an
automobile. The speed of the engine is controlled from a twist-grip
on the handle-bars.
The gearbox is operated by a foot lever, and power is transmitted
to the rear wheels by a chain drive. The clutch is operated by a
hand lever on the handlebars. So is the front brake. A foot pedal
operates the rear brake.
