Neptune, planet facts for kids
Counting outwards from the Sun, Neptune is the eighth planet of
the Solar System. It was discovered because irregular movements of
Uranus led astronomers to suspect the presence of another planet
nearby. They searched the probable area and eventually found
Neptune in 1846.

Neptune is nearly 28,000 miles across. Its average distance from
the Sun is 2,794 miles, and it takes 165 years to travel around it.
The temperature on Neptune is about minus 330° F. Its atmosphere is
a mixture of poisonous gases, probably about 2,000 miles deep. Its
two moons are Triton and Nereid.
