Petrified Forest facts

Petrified Forest is made up of prehistoric tree trunks that have turned to stone with the passing of time. Millions of years ago, the trunks were buried in mud or volcanic ash. Water seeped into the logs, and minerals in the water slowly turned the decaying wood into stone.

There are several petrified forests. Probably the best known is the Petrified Forest National Park in the Painted Desert, Arizona. Petrified Forest National Park is a United State National Park along Interstate 40 between Navajo and Holbrook, Arizona. Petrified Forest facts: the park covers about 133 square miles, and consists of six 'forests' of these ancient tree trunks. They are estimated to be about 150,000,000 years old.

Petrified Forest facts:

A tree trunk in the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. The trunk was once part of a Norfolk Island pine tree that grew there about 150 million years ago. Now it is made up of gray silica with spots and streaks of iron oxide and manganese oxide.

Although most of these logs are broken into many parts, some remain whole. The trunks vary in length, some being as long as 125 feet. Most logs are about three or four feet wide, the largest ones having a width of six feet. These trees were once cone-bearing evergreens. Today, they are mainly made up of the minerals silica, iron and manganese. These minerals have formed beautiful streaks and spots of many colors.
