Photosynthesis interesting facts

Photosynthesis is the building of sugars by cells of green plants (see Plants, interesting plant facts for kids), using energy derived from the Sun - in this biology posters let’s talk about it more in detail.

Only green plants are able to make their own food. Consequently, they are the basis of all life on Earth. Some animals eat plants, and other animals eat the animals that ate the plants. In this way, the energy originally captured and transformed into food by plants is distributed among all living things in the world.

Two leaves are removed from a destarched plant. The upper side of one and the lower side of the other are greased with Vaseline. The stalks of each are dipped in water (1) and the leaves are left in light for four hours so.that photosynthesis takes place. Most of the Vaseline is wiped off and the leaves are placed in a solution of iodine in potassium iodide (2). The plant greased on the upper side develops a blue color (3b), showing that starch has formed by photosynthesis from carbon dioxide which entered through the leaf pores which are mainly on the underside. No color develops in the other leaf (3a) in which Vaseline blocked the pores.

The raw materials for photosynthesis are carbon dioxide and water, and the primary regions of sugar production are the cells of the leaves. Leaf cells are packed with envelopes of green coloring matter called chlorophyll, which is essential to photosynthesis. It absorbs light energy and converts it into chemical energy. This chemical energy is then used to build up the sugar in the leaf. It is a complex process, still not fully understood, but the end result is that the carbon dioxide and water produce sugar and oxygen.

Photosynthesis interesting facts: in bright light, carbon dioxide enters the leaf because photosynthesis needs more than the small amount produced by respiration. More oxygen is produced than respiration consumes, so oxygen passes out. In dim light, the exchange of gases is balanced. Respiration produces enough Carbonic gas for photosynthesis and the latter produces enough oxygen for respiration. In the dark, photosynthesis ceases. Oxygen enters one leaf and carbon dioxide is given off

The oxygen produced by photosynthesis escapes into the air. In this way, green plants are continually 'refueling' the air with oxygen - the gas vital to animal life. If all the green plants were to die, animals would eventually use up the supply of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere.
