Poland - interesting facts

Poland is a country in central Europe. Bordered by the Baltic Sea, Belarus, Russia, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Germany, Poland has been invaded and fought over many times.

Poland is almost entirely flat. Many lakes and forests lie in the north. In southern Poland, the thickly forested Carpathian Mountains form the border with Czechoslovakia. Poland has warm summers and cold winters.

Nearly half of Poland's people are farmers. Many of them work on state-owned farms where cereals and vegetables are the major crops. The forests provide timber, wood pulp and paper which are important exports. Poland is a leading producer of coal. Industry is expanding and is mostly government controlled.

In the A.D. 900's, tribal people united into a nation with borders similar to the Poland of today. From the late 1300's to the 1600s, Poland enjoyed its greatest prosperity. Poland was invaded in 1772, 1793 and 1795 and divided between Austria, Prussia and Russia. After many revolts, Poland became an independent state in 1918. In the early 1920's, under Josef Pilsudski, Poland extended its eastern borders by taking territory from Russia.

In 1939, Poland was invaded by Germany and Russia who partitioned the country between them. In 1941-1945, Germany controlled Poland and large numbers of people were deported and killed. In 1945, the Russians army drove the Germans out and.a Polish communist government was set up. From 1956, following a revolt, reforms were introduced, and more religious freedom was granted. In 1968, with Russia, Poland moved troops into Czechoslovakia to keep that country communist.

After disorder of USSR Poland has received independence. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and joined the European Union in 2004.
