PompeiiPompeii is a ruined city near Naples in southern Italy. It was partly destroyed by an earthquake in A.D. 63, and completely buried under ashes and mud when nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79. However unfortunate for the inhabitants of the time, this catastrophe preserved much of the city for history. After excavations, which began on a proper archeological basis only in 1748, an almost complete ancient city was revealed in a remarkable state of preservation. Not only were most of the buildings uncovered, but statues, furniture, household utensils, and even the bodies of some of its people and animals were found. Pompeii, in Italy, was buried under ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. After excavation, the city was in a remarkable state of preservation. You can read these articles also: |
