Facts about probability for kidsProbability is a mathematical term that expresses how likely something is to happen. If an event is certain to occur, then it has a probability of 1. If the event is impossible, the probability of it happening is 0. Probability can be expressed for all events if we know how many events are going to happen, and how many of these we are interested in. The probability of the interesting event happening is their number divided by the total number of events. For example, if we toss a coin and are interested in it coming up heads, the probability of this happening is 1/2. The total number of events that may occur is 2 the coin coming up heads or coming up tails. But we are interested in only one of these events when it comes up heads. If we spin the coin twice, and want to know the probability of it coming up heads both times, we multiply the probabilities of each spin together. Thus, this probability is 1/2 multiplied by 1/2, equals 1/4. If we spin the coin six times, the probability that it will come up heads six times running is 1/64. But there is a strange paradox here. The probability of the sixth spin being heads after five heads have come up in a row is only 1/2, as each single spin can be considered separately.
