Rainbow facts for kids

Rainbows are caused by the effect of sunlight on countless millions of raindrops. Sunlight is made up of a number of colors which together normally appear as 'white' light. But these colors are separated when sunlight passes through a raindrop and is reflected back from the inside surface.

Spectacular rainbows can often be seen in the spray of a waterfall

A rainbow is made by sunlight shining through tiny drops of water in the air. The raindrop breaks the sunlight up into the colors of which it is formed

Each color - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet - comes out at a different angle. A fainter rainbow can usually be seen above the main bow. It is formed by light reflected twice inside the raindrops, and its colors are in the reverse order.

Rainbows occur whenever the Sun shines on rain. But you can see them only if you are between the Sun and the rain, and if the Sun is not too high in the sky. If the Sun is near the horizon, a person in an aircraft or standing on a high hill might be able to see the full circle of the rainbow. The Moon also forms a rainbow, but it is feeble compared with the Sun's, as the Moon's light is only reflected sunlight.
