Raphael interesting facts and artworks

Raphael (1483-1520) is the name by which we know the great Italian painter (see Artist painters list), Raffaelo Sanzio. He painted during the Renaissance - a period of revival in learning that began at the end of the Middle Ages. Some of artist's greatest paintings are in the Vatican, in Rome, where he decorated some rooms for Pope Julius II.

Michelangelo, another famous artist, was painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican at the same time, and from him Raphael learned about anatomy. In one of the rooms of the Vatican, called the Stanza della Segnatura, Raphael painted the School of Athens. It shows two philosophers, Plato and Aristotle, talking together and is one of the most famous paintings of the Renaissance.

Artist was born in Urbino, Italy, and first studied with his father, who was also an artist. Much of his early work was influenced by his teacher, the famous painter Perugino. Later, in Florence, Raphael was influenced by the great painters Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo. Among his work from this period are many serene paintings of the Madonna.
