Rhinoceros facts for kids

This is a huge, ungainly mammal that has - depending on the kind - one or two thick horns growing upwards from its snout. The black rhinoceros and white rhinoceros of Africa and the very rare Sumatran rhinoceros of Asia have two horns, one behind the other, the front horn generally being the longer. The Javan rhinoceros and Indian rhinoceros of Asia have single horns. All rhinoceros' horns are hard outgrowths from the skin and have no bony core. They are not true horns
.
The white rhinoceros (which is gray rather than white) is the third biggest land animal in the world, and may weigh more than three tons and stand six feet high at the shoulder. The other kinds are smaller, but all have massive bodies and thick, short legs. Their thick, hard skin hangs in folds. They live mainly in grasslands, eating only plant food.
