Samuel Colt quotesColt, Samuel (1814-1862), was the inventor of the first successful revolver. His Colt six-shooter was widely used in the opening up of the West. Colt was born in Hartford, Connecticut. During a voyage to India, he carved his first wooden model of a revolver. On his return to the United States, he improved his design and patented it in 1836. Then in 1846, when fighting started between the United States and Mexico, the government ordered 1,000 Colt revolvers. Colt had them made at the famous Whitney gun factory where he learned how to build machines to make his revolvers. In 1847, Colt set up his own factory, using the most modern machines and methods available. By 1855, the factory he built at Hartford, Connecticut, was the largest private arms factory in the world.
