Connecticut

The southernmost New England state, Connecticut lies on the northeast coast of the United States. Connecticut is highly industrialized, but it is also a major vacation area. Its beaches, lakes, woodlands, and historic sites attract many visitors, many of whom come from New York and other nearby large cities.

Most of the first settlers in Connecticut were English. However, today nearly half of the state's 2,988,000 people are descendants of Italian, Polish, Russian, Irish, German, French and Canadian immigrants.

The country is mostly rolling, wooded upland, with many lakes, waterfalls and potholes that were carved out by glaciers during the Ice Age. Connecticut is one of the smallest states. It covers only 5,009 square miles. The first Europeans came to Connecticut in the early 1600's. By 1633-4, three colonies had been established and by 1637, the colonists had won a war against the Pequot Indians. The three colonies united to form the Connecticut Colony. The charter they wrote in 1639 was the first written constitution of a self-governing people. For this reason, Connecticut has been nicknamed Constitution State. In 1775, Connecticut provided volunteers and supplies for the American forces in the Revolution against Britain. Connecticut became the fifth state when it approved the United States constitution in 1788.
